Workplace Health and Safety Considerations for Plumbers

Workplace Health and Safety Considerations for Plumbers | Plumbers | Scoop.it

Like many trades, plumbing can be a dangerous job. Here are some common hazards plumbers routinely face on the job.

And like many trades, plumbers are often self-employed or employed by small businesses which don’t have the resources to have a dedicated workplace health and safety officer. This places an even bigger onus on workers to ensure that everyone takes responsibility for workplace safety, identifying hazards and working to eliminate or at least minimise risks.

There are a few common safety considerations that plumbers need to be particularly aware of and consider carefully when developing Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and completing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) processes. It is important to take all reasonably practicable measures to keep the project, employees, customers and yourself incident and injury free.

Testing and Certification of Plumbing Products to Australia’s WaterMark Program

Testing and Certification of Plumbing Products to Australia’s WaterMark Program | Plumbers | Scoop.it

Global public health organisation NSF International and Australian-based certification organisation Global-Mark have partnered to provide WaterMark certification, which is required for all plumbing products used in Australia. The partnership combines Global-Mark's expertise in Australian water regulations with NSF International's experience in testing and certifying plumbing products to national and international standards.

WaterMark certification demonstrates that plumbing products comply with the quality and safety regulatory requirements of Australia and New Zealand, including the Plumbing Code of Australia. The aim of the partnership is to streamline WaterMark certification and enable plumbing manufacturers to bring their certified products to Australian and New Zealand (AS/NZ) markets.

Under the terms of the agreement, Global-Mark will serve as the programme administrator, providing facility audits, reviewing audit and test reports and issuing the WaterMark certificates. NSF International will continue to provide testing of products to the AS/NZ standards and other WaterMark test criteria and will supply the test reports to Global-Mark for review.

Remember 11 March is World Plumbing Day

Remember 11 March is World Plumbing Day | Plumbers | Scoop.it

You might have never heard of the day, World Plumbing Day, but The Master Plumbers and the Mechanical Contractors Association wants people to know about this day. World Plumbing Day is an international event occurring on the March 11 every year.

The UN declared the decade of the years 2005 till 2015 the International Decade Water for Life, With this action they want to raise more awareness towards water, because it is our main source for life. This initiative of the UN is definitely important for the whole world. Especially when we think about 3rd world countries, where preventable diseases related to water and sanitation claim the lives of more than 3 million people every year, most of these casualties are children who have not even reached their 5th birthday. Of these, about 1,6 million people die each year of diseases that have diarrhea associated with lack of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

When we could arrange access to safe drinking water supplies and a proper sanitation in these countries, the world community proposes 97 million additional people annually will have access to drinking-water services and 138 million additional people access to sanitation services through 2015.

Specifying the right hot water system for medium density

Specifying the right hot water system for medium density | Plumbers | Scoop.it

The growth of medium density housing continues, with approvals having now reached an all-time high and no slow-down in sight. As medium density design becomes an increasingly significant part of many architect’s jobs, understanding and addressing the unique challenges of medium density design becomes crucial.

In these developments where space is at a premium, maximizing what space is available is a critical consideration through every step of the design process. These challenges demand creative solutions and design innovations.

One important aspect often overlooked until later in the design process is the choice of hot water system. Failure to consider the appropriate hot water technologies and installation location in the initial design stages can have an adverse impact on the aesthetics and amenity of a dwelling.

Trade apprentices and trade training.

Trade apprentices and trade training. | Plumbers | Scoop.it

After conducting research, the outcomes suggest that learning a trade might be a better investment than going to the university. This occurs if the cost of obtaining a university degree increases under the Government's plan to deregulate university fees.

Damian Oliver, a leading analyst in the Research Center at Sydney's Business School, thinks that students are doubting if getting a university grade is worth the payment.

According to Dr Oliver, there is a real case to be made for increasing the information that is transferable to potential students about the value of certain qualifications and the state of the labor market.

While the economy is still not running optimal, which leads to an decreasing number of stable full-time jobs, this generation of school leavers should ask themselves the question whether a university education is more cost-effective or if a certain qualification, such as a trade, might be a better investment.

Top4's insight:

I think that it's a real potential advantage at having a vocational qualification rather than a university qualification at the moment.

They're often cheaper and lead to much stronger and more reliable labor market outcomes. But that is just my opinion, you on the contrary might completely disagree.
